Some of the popular carpet types include Plush pile, nylon, wool, textured, twist, Berber and a whole lot more. Popular designs are plain, modern patterned, wool, traditional patterned, natural, sculptured, shaggy and textured. Every type of carpet has numerous properties, some durable, some are much easier to maintain, some are more suited for high traffic areas and so forth.

A wool carpet is a popular choice for homeowners. This is because they are hard wearing, durable, comfortable, elegant and provide rich colors. In general, they are mixed with other synthetic materials like polyester for a comfy feeling, luxury look and additional durability. Wool carpets have a pile which springs back to place after it has had weight applied and provides a good level of cushioning from the underlay.

Nylon carpets are man-made material that is highly resistant to general wear and tear and thoroughly synthetic. They're great for high traffic spaces and could retain the color and patterns even under considerable traffic. A nylon carpet is referred to sometimes as 'Polyamide Carpet' and could be styled after tufting. There are also polypropylene carpets, are among the most common types available and could be found in most homes. The style has excellent resistance to wear and stains and low-cost, which make it suitable for almost all home applications. Polypropylene carpets do not have the same luxurious feel compared to expensive ones like wool, but they offer great value for the money.

For homeowners who are finding it hard to decide what type of carpet to spruce up a home, it is a good idea to find out more about the different types, not just on the color and style.  Below are various carpet styles and descriptions.
  1. Level Loop - A simple loop pile that has tufts of equal height. It is great for high traffic spaces like stairs, hallways, kitchens, kids and family rooms.
  2. Multi-level Loop - has several levels of tufts that form a sculptured surface. Berbers created from synthetic or wool are examples of multilevel loop. The flooring is perfect for busy rooms. The sculpted surface offers a more formal appearance compared to level loops.
  3. Cut loop - is the same as a random shear, except that the uncut and cut loops are at different heights. The sculptured appearance suits informal living or dining rooms.
  4. Random shear - also known as tip shear. It has cut and uncut loops that create a textured look. It could either be formal or informal but not great for kitchens.
  5. Saxony plush - level-cut, dense pile of one-half inch or less, with closely packed yarn tufts. It is luxurious and smooth, and great for formal settings like living rooms, dining spaces and bedrooms.
  6. Textured plush - a level-cut pile that has heights of over one-half inch. It is not as dense as Saxony plush. The type is not for stairs since a heel could get caught in the long yarn. However, it could be used in any informal setting except the kitchen.
  7. Berber - has become quite popular recently due to the elegant look. Tufts are looped and aligned in rows for a uniform, clean look. It is good to choose one with smaller loops for the best wear as large loops tend to collapse fast and appear worn-out sooner.
